Do The Thing You Know You Should Be Doing

Summary

  • The biggest risk to your future isn't competition; it's distractions you keep in your life.
  • Often, you know what you need to do but end up filling your time with other tasks.
  • When you finally do the important task, it usually takes less time than you thought.
  • This delay in starting the task often takes more time than the task itself.
  • By not delaying, you could accomplish multiple tasks within the same timeframe.
  • Reducing the time between deciding to do something and actually starting it is key.
  • Once you start, what was unknown becomes clear and manageable.
  • Breaking down big tasks into smaller problems makes them easier to handle.
  • Tackle these smaller bits one at a time, making the big task feel less overwhelming.

How To Take Action

I would suggest implementing a few steps to cut out distractions and start tasks without delay. Here's how you can do it:

  1. Eliminate Distractions: Look at your day and identify distractions. Turn off notifications, set specific times to check emails, and create a clean, focused workspace.

  2. Clear Priorities: Write down the most important task you need to accomplish. Keep this list visible to remind yourself what needs to be done first.

  3. Quick Start Rule: As soon as you identify a task, start working on it right away. Don’t spend time overthinking. The beginning is often the hardest part, so just dive in.

  1. Chunk Tasks: Break larger tasks into smaller parts. This makes them less overwhelming and more manageable. You can handle small problems one at a time, which builds momentum.

  2. Time Blocking: Schedule dedicated blocks of time to work on your most important tasks each day. This reduces procrastination and ensures you focus on what matters.

  3. Reflect and Adjust: At the end of each day, review what you accomplished and adjust your strategies as needed. Maybe you found new distractions that need eliminating or tasks that can be broken down further.

By following these steps, you’ll find that tasks take much less time than expected, allowing you to accomplish more within the same timeframe. Start small, stay consistent, and watch how much more productive you become.

the biggest risk to your future isn't your competition it's the distractions you insist on keeping in your life rather than doing the things you know you should be doing but aren't there have been so many times in my life where I knew I needed to do something and then I filled all this extra time not doing that thing and then the moment I did it I was like wow that took way less time than I thought it was going to take and not only that it took way less time than it took me to delay to actually get to this point and if I had only started with just doing what I was supposed to do I could have done four or five other things that I was also supposed to do by this exact same point and so thinking about it from that perspective I've try to eliminate as much time between I think I should do this thing and beginning doing it and then all of a sudden what feels really unknown becomes very tangible and you're like oh I understand the six problems I have to solve to do this big thing but now I know the problems and then it feels like you can you can wrap your arms around it and then you can start taking it one bite at a time
