Don’t Become This Kind of Boss

Summary

  • We were the top performing team in the region, beating every other location on the West Coast.
  • One day, this new leader came in, and his ability to read the room was off.
  • He told us we weren't doing well and needed to hit our numbers, even though we were succeeding.
  • This approach made me feel unexcited about coming to work the next day.
  • The environment shifted from feeling safe, encouraging, and supportive to one where I dreaded going to work.
  • I would sit outside of work and cry in my car because I didn't want to go in.
  • It only took one person, the leader, to change a thriving environment into a toxic one.

How To Take Action

Implementing lessons from this experience can make a significant difference for small businesses, entrepreneurs, or anyone focusing on personal growth. Here are some great steps you can take:

  1. Understand and Read the Room: Before making any changes or giving feedback, observe the current mood and performance of your team or yourself. Are things already going well? If so, recognize this and build on it instead of disrupting the positive momentum.

  2. Constructive Feedback: Always give feedback based on actual performance data. If your team or you are doing well, acknowledge this. Positive reinforcement can be more motivating than focusing only on areas needing improvement.

  3. Create a Supportive Environment: Make sure the work environment is somewhere people feel safe and encouraged. Celebrate successes, however small, and encourage growth and learning.

  1. Empathy in Leadership: Whether you're leading a team or yourself, empathy is key. Understand how actions and words can impact emotions and performance. Avoid creating unnecessary stress or negativity.

  2. Maintain Open Communication: Regularly check in with your team or yourself. This doesn’t have to be time-consuming. Short, regular catch-ups or self-reflection sessions can help maintain a positive environment.

  3. Avoid Quick Criticism: Quickly jumping to negative conclusions without understanding the full picture can harm the morale and drive of the team. Spend time knowing the strengths and challenges before suggesting changes.

By focusing on these areas, you can retain a high-performing, positive, and supportive environment that fosters growth and success. The key is to be thoughtful and considerate, ensuring that changes and feedback are well-received and constructive.
