Employees Are Scared of Me?

Summary

  • It takes time for people to realize that I won't yell at them, especially if they had a punishing boss before.
  • I have to counter their past experiences by consistently not yelling, which means outdoing what their previous boss did.
  • Even if their last boss only yelled after several meetings, I need to maintain a non-punishing demeanor until they trust that I’m different.
  • I am committed to being the opposite of a punishing leader, but I understand that overcoming past fears in others isn't instant.

How To Take Action

A good way of creating a positive work environment is by consistently acting in a non-punishing manner. If you're a leader, make an effort to be kind and patient, especially if your team has had negative experiences in the past. Here are simple ways to do this:

  • Be Consistent: Keep a calm demeanor during meetings. Even if things don't go perfectly, avoid yelling or becoming frustrated. It’s about repeating this positive behavior to replace their past negative experiences.

  • Communicate Openly: Encourage your team to share their thoughts and worries. Make it clear that they can speak freely without fear of retribution. This will help build trust faster.

  • Set Clear Expectations: Make sure everyone knows what's expected from them. When people understand their roles and tasks, it reduces stress and misunderstandings, which leads to a calmer atmosphere.

  • Provide Positive Feedback: Don't just focus on what needs to be improved. Make an effort to acknowledge and praise good work often. This shows you value their efforts and creates a positive cycle.

  • Model Forgiveness: Mistakes happen. Show your team that it’s okay to make mistakes, and focus on finding solutions rather than placing blame.

By consistently implementing these strategies, you can create a supportive work environment where people feel safe, motivated, and understood, ultimately leading to a more productive and happy team.
