Expectation vs Reality
Summary
- I've noticed when you buy a product, the sales process can be wonderfully engaging but once the purchase is made, the communication can drop off sharply.
- It's common for the actual product to not meet the high expectations set during the sales pitch.
- Similarly, employees often experience a disconnect between the job description they were excited about and the reality of the workplace.
- Companies tend to create grand job descriptions and make big promises, but they don't always deliver on creating that experience for their new hires.
- Even if a job does meet some expectations, employees can still feel let down if their initial impression was based on exaggerated promises.

How To Take Action
I would suggest starting with the power of honesty in both product sales and job descriptions. Be real about what you're selling or the job you're offering. Don’t oversell, keep it truthful. This makes sure no one feels cheated after they buy your product or start a new job.
If you're a business owner, after someone buys your product, keep up the communication! Send them a thank you note, or a quick guide on how to get the most from their purchase. Small gestures like this can make a big difference.
For entrepreneurs or those focused on personal growth, don’t just create expectations, but follow through. If you promise a feature or a benefit, make sure it’s really there. Match your actions to your words – this builds trust and your reputation.
And when hiring, write a job description that really matches the role. Don't copy something from the internet. Describe what the day-to-day will be like. When someone starts working with you, check in with them. Ask if the job is what they expected, and listen to their feedback.
Remember, whether it's a customer or a new employee, it's all about the experience you create. If you promise the moon, be ready to deliver it, or be honest about what you can really offer. Small, honest actions can have a huge impact and help your business or self-growth journey tremendously.
