Going From Remote to in Person …
Summary
- To make team members exceptional, I think about three different key skills for each person and structure presentations around those.
- Skills may include giving feedback effectively or communicating well with portfolio companies.
- We recognize each other's hard work through awards and recognitions.
- We have an MVP award for the person who's improved the most, chosen by team votes.
- Everyone has the chance to recognize a teammate for a core value and explain why.
- Reading out these recognitions aloud is meaningful and often brings us to tears, even though we aren't typically a crying team.

How To Take Action
Action Plan for Personal Growth and Team Development
Focus on Key Skills
A good way of improving team performance is by identifying three key skills for each team member. For instance, if someone excels in communication, feedback, or another specific area, have them create a presentation to teach the rest of the team. This helps spread knowledge and encourages everyone to build on their strengths.
Effective Communication
Learning to give feedback and communicate effectively can be game-changers. Practice these skills by having regular feedback sessions where you encourage open and constructive comments. This could be as simple as setting aside 30 minutes once a week.
Recognition and Awards
To boost morale and acknowledge hard work, consider implementing awards and recognition. Create an MVP award that team members vote for, recognizing the person who has shown the most improvement. This doesn't cost much but can have a big impact on team motivation.
Core Value Recognition
In meetings, give everyone a chance to recognize a teammate for displaying core values. Explain why they’re being recognized and read these recognitions aloud. This creates a positive environment and makes everyone feel valued. You could do this monthly or quarterly.
Emotional Value
Although not typically a "crying team," the act of reading recognitions aloud can be deeply meaningful. It shows that hard work is noticed and appreciated, fostering a sense of belonging and motivation. This can be included as part of your regular meetings.
By focusing on these low-cost, high-value actions, you can create a more motivated, skilled, and cohesive team.
