Great Managers Know How and When to Fire
Summary
- When deciding whether to help someone find their next job after letting them go, I consider their performance and behavior.
- If they've been great and worked hard but are not the right fit, I help them if I can.
- If their performance has been poor or they've acted unethically, I don't pass them off to another company.
- For about the first three or four years of my career, I tried to help people whenever I could, unless they did something really bad.

How To Take Action
I would suggest implementing these strategies if you’re a small business owner or entrepreneur.
Evaluate Performance and Behavior
First, always consider the performance and behavior of your team members. If someone is a hard worker and has been great, but just isn’t the right fit for your company, then helping them find their next job can benefit your network and reputation. Make sure you take a balanced approach here. If their performance has been poor or they have acted unethically, it's best not to recommend them to others. This helps maintain your integrity and the trust others place in you.
Apply Selective Assistance
In the first three to four years of your career, helping people out can build strong relationships and rapport. This doesn’t mean you should help everyone indiscriminately. Being selective ensures you invest your time wisely and only help those who genuinely deserve it. This strategy can help you cultivate a more supportive and high-performing network around you.
Low-Cost, High-Value Actions
Start with actions that cost less time and money but add significant value. For instance, offer to review a resume or provide a reference for someone who performed well but wasn't the right fit for your team. These small gestures can make a big difference to them and require minimal effort from you.
Uphold Ethical Standards
Always uphold ethical standards in your interactions. If someone has acted unethically or performed poorly, refrain from passing them off to another company. This stance will help maintain a high ethical standard within your business and ensure that you are seen as trustworthy and reliable.
By focusing on these strategies, you can manage your team more effectively while also building a positive reputation in your industry.
