Have An Open Calendar

Summary

  • I've realized the importance of having free time in my calendar for deep thought, following the example set by Charlie Munger and Warren Buffett, who spend over six hours a day reading and thinking.
  • While I'm not at the level where I only need a couple of good decisions each year, I understand the high leverage impact of making better decisions.
  • Emulating this approach, I strive to leverage my time by investing it into the right vehicles, thereby getting more returns for the effort I put in.

How To Take Action

A good way of doing more with less is to take a page from Charlie Munger and Warren Buffett’s book. They spend lots of time just reading and thinking! So, you want to manage your time like money. Think about putting your time into things that give you a big reward for the work you do.

First, look at your schedule. Find some free time, maybe start with just 30 minutes a day. That time is for you to think deeply. No meetings, no emails—just think. Use it to make big plans or to learn something new.

Second, use that thinking time to make good choices. Every choice is like planting a seed. Some seeds grow into big trees. Others don’t grow at all. Spend your think time to find the best seeds. This means deciding on things that will help you or your business the most.

Third, remember, this isn't about having giant chunks of time like Buffet and Munger. It's about starting small. Maybe you don’t need six hours. Start with what you can do now. Even the busiest person can find a few minutes!

Lastly, when you choose what to do, pick things that are like a superhighway, not a dirt road. Your time should take you fast to where you want to be. Put time into learning or building things that help a lot of people at once or make things better for a long time.

By doing these things, you can get big results from a little bit of time. It's like finding hidden treasure in your day. So, start with a little bit of think time and grow from there!

as time has gone on I continue to expand the block of time that is free in my calendar so that I have time to think Charlie said and different occasions that he and Warren spend 6 hours plus per day just reading and thinking and they're obviously in a position where they have so much leverage where they need to make one to two really good decisions a year and that's a good year obviously I'm not at that level but there is a degree of Leverage that I try to emulate where if I can make better decisions I can get so much more for the effort that I put in by allocating my time into the right vehicles
