Hot Take: You Don’t Need to Respond to Everyone’s Texts

Summary

  • I believe in pushing things to the limit, so if I think about the idea of responding to texts, I apply it to an extreme scenario.
  • For instance, if I were to receive a million texts a day, there's no way I could respond to all of them.
  • This means I have to make choices about who gets my time and attention.
  • If I have to prioritize at a million texts, the same rule should apply if I get just one text.
  • Many people don't have a high demand for their time, so they might reply to everyone, but that's a choice, not a necessity.
  • I suggest setting your own boundaries based on how much time you're willing to allocate to messaging, and start prioritizing when you hit that limit.

How To Take Action

I would suggest implementing time management strategies with a focus on your messaging habits. Think about this: if you had to handle a million texts every day, you just couldn't reply to them all. So, you'd need to pick who gets your time. Treat your time like it's that valuable, even if it's just one text. Here's what you do:

  1. Decide Your Limit: Figure out how many messages you can honestly answer in a day without getting overwhelmed. That's your limit.

  2. Set Boundaries: Once you hit your messaging limit, stop. It's better to give good attention to a few conversations than to spread yourself too thin.

  3. Prioritize: Not all texts are created equal. Some are from friends, some from customers, some just aren't that important. Answer the most important ones first based on your goals.

Remember, even if you aren't getting a ton of messages, it's your choice to answer them. Just because you can, doesn't mean you should. It's not a must-do but a choice based on what's best for you. Keep your goals in mind and let those drive how you use your time, especially when it comes to messaging folks. This way, you stay in charge of your time and not the other way around.

"which means that I then have to prioritize who I respond to"

"and so if you do it at a million messages a day you might as well do it with one message a day"
