How Do You Get Good at Hiring?

Summary

  • I learned to hire effectively by doing it a lot. Our company grew from zero to $30 million in 18 months, and I had to build a team fast.
  • Growing our team from 0 to 120 people in three years required intensive interviewing, sometimes five times a day for several months.
  • I realized that if I didn't master hiring quickly, I would bottleneck our company's growth.
  • Understanding the urgency and necessity of rapid learning can push you to develop skills faster than you might expect.
  • Sometimes, being thrown into the deep end is the best way to learn something new.

How To Take Action

I would suggest implementing what I like to call the "dive-in" approach when you're learning something new. If you're an entrepreneur or interested in personal growth, throw yourself into the process. This means taking on tasks, like hiring or interviewing, even if they seem daunting at first. You learn a lot more by doing than by waiting until you're perfectly ready. So, start small but start now. You can increase practices gradually—like interviewing a few candidates at first before ramping up the numbers—just like I did when I needed to build my team quickly.

A good way of doing this is by setting a dedicated time each day or week for focused learning or practice. It’s all about consistency. Even if it’s just an hour each day, those hours add up. For entrepreneurs, set aside time for reviewing resumes, interviewing candidates, and refining your hiring process. It’s not just about getting it right the first time, but improving with each attempt.

Another high-value, low-cost strategy is to learn from others. If you know someone who excels at what you're trying to learn, spend time with them, ask questions, and observe how they work. You’ll gain insights and tips that can be applied immediately without spending much money or time. Remember, urgency pushes growth—sometimes it's okay to be uncomfortable; that's when real learning happens.
