How I Deal With Anxiety

Summary

  • I understand anxiety as having many plans but few priorities, causing uncertainty about what to do next.
  • In contrast, sadness can stem from not seeing any path forward at all.
  • To combat anxiety, it's crucial to force rank your priorities by asking, "What is most important to me?"
  • After determining what comes first, everything else should take a secondary role.
  • Establishing a clear order of priorities gives you the clarity needed to make decisions focused on achieving a specific outcome.

How To Take Action

A good way of doing things when feeling overwhelmed is to start by asking, "What is most important to me?" This question helps figure out what you should focus on first. Once you know what matters most, you need to put that above everything else. This doesn't mean ignoring other plans, but it means they come after your top priority.

To combat anxiety, write down all the things you want to do. Then, rank them in order. Ask yourself why each task is important and what outcome it will help you achieve. Think about which one, if done first, will make everything else easier or more successful.

If you feel sad because you can't see any way forward, pick just one plan that feels a bit exciting or hopeful. Focus on taking a small step towards it. This can be as simple as reading an article, talking to someone who knows about it, or writing down the first few steps you need to take.

Remember, once you have a clear priority, you should make decisions based on that. If something new comes up, ask yourself, "Does this help my main goal?" If it doesn't, it's okay to say no or save it for later.

By doing this, you'll create a clear path ahead and start to feel more confident about your next steps. And, it's okay to change your priorities if you need to — just go through the same process and adjust your focus as needed.
