How I Got Better at Public Speaking

Summary

  • Get Better Through Practice: When I started my YouTube channel, the videos were terrible. But I improved by doing more of them. Just like in sports, getting better at something, whether it's sales or creating content, requires practice and repetition.

  • Be Authentic: I find it easier to get on camera and create content when I am being myself. It's important to be honest and open because pretending to be someone else or talking about things you don't understand will make it harder.

  • Stay Within Your Expertise: I never talk about topics I’m not knowledgeable about. Always ensure that you have something useful and true to share. It's okay to admit if there is something you don't know.

How To Take Action

I would suggest implementing some easy and low-cost strategies to improve in business or personal growth. Start by practicing consistently. Whether it's sales, creating content, or any other skill, you need to keep doing it to get better. Don't be afraid if your first attempts aren't great. Just like I did with my YouTube videos, it’s all about practice and repetition.

A good way of doing this is to set a regular schedule for practice. For a small business owner, this might mean practicing your sales pitch daily or creating a short video each week. The key is consistency, even if you only do a little bit at a time.

Another important tip is to be authentic. When you are genuine, people can sense it, and it makes your content or business interactions more relatable. Don’t try to be someone you’re not or talk about things you don’t understand. This will make it easier to create content or engage with customers because you're just being you.

Lastly, stay within your expertise. Don't try to cover topics you don't know well. If a customer or audience member asks about something outside your expertise, it's okay to say you don’t know. This honesty builds trust and shows that you are reliable. Stick to what you know and keep learning in those areas to provide the most value.
