How To Achieve Your Goals
Summary
- I use the VAM system for goal setting.
- The key is to have a vision of what you want the company to become. It doesn't need to be perfect. Just get something out there.
- Don't get paralyzed by making the vision perfect. You can always change it later if needed.
- Define what your vision looks like both internally and externally. Include metrics, revenue, the number of people you’re helping, and who your customer is.
- Ask yourself what you need to do in the next 12 months to achieve that vision.
- Set three to five targets for the year.
- Break down those yearly targets into three-month goals.
- Continuously review your three-month and annual goals to ensure they are still right and you are on track.
- Focus on the activities that will drive you towards achieving these goals.

How To Take Action
I suggest implementing a simple goal-setting system using the VAM method to help you grow your business or achieve personal goals. Here's a step-by-step approach:
Step 1: Define Your Vision
- Vision Setting: Start by picturing what you want your company or yourself to become. This vision doesn’t need to be perfect; it’s okay if it changes later. Just get it down on paper.
- Internal and External Factors: Describe what your vision looks like inside and outside the company. Think about metrics like revenue, number of customers, and who those customers are.
Step 2: Set Yearly Targets
- 12-Month Goals: Ask yourself what you need to accomplish in the next 12 months to move closer to your vision. Pick three to five key targets for the year. These targets should be clear and measurable.
Step 3: Break It Down Quarterly
- Three-Month Goals: Break down your yearly targets into smaller, more manageable three-month goals. This makes the big picture less overwhelming and helps you stay focused.
Step 4: Continuous Review
- Regular Check-ins: Continuously review your three-month and annual goals to ensure they are still relevant and you are on track. Adjust as necessary.
- Activity Focus: Concentrate on activities that directly drive you toward these goals. This keeps your efforts centered on what really matters.
Quick Tips
- Start Small: Focus on low-cost, high-value activities. For example, identify one or two key metrics to track initially.
- Stay Flexible: Be open to modifying your vision and goals as you learn and grow. This adaptability is crucial for long-term success.
- Consistent Tracking: Keep an eye on your progress regularly. Quick reviews can help catch issues before they become big problems.
By following these steps, you can steadily progress toward your vision without feeling overwhelmed or bogged down by perfectionism.
