How To Enjoy Hard Work

Summary

  • Liking a task isn't about the task itself, it's about the reward linked to doing it well.
  • I've seen Tech reps fall in love with fixing bugs because we rewarded them with Starbucks gift cards for high-level fixes.
  • People often strive for roles where they get recognized and rewarded; we like what we're good at and what we're praised for.
  • As a founder, it's not just about the job itself but how you reinforce and reward the work being done.
  • Founders often focus on marketing and sales because the impact is immediate and understandable.
  • You should also focus on reinforcing and rewarding other departments, not just marketing and sales.
  • Spend less time doing your team's job and more time rewarding them for doing their job well.

How To Take Action

I would suggest implementing a rewarding system for tasks that can bring motivation and a sense of accomplishment. It isn’t about the task itself but the reward associated with doing it well. Here’s how you can apply that:

  • Start Small with Rewards: Use simple rewards like gift cards or extra time off for specific achievements. For example, if your employee fixes a tricky problem, reward them with a small gift card.

  • Recognize All Roles: Don’t just focus on marketing and sales. Make sure you're recognizing and rewarding efforts in all departments. This makes everyone feel valued and can increase overall productivity.

  • Delegate More: Spend less time doing your team's tasks and more time acknowledging their good work. This can be something as simple as an email or a shoutout during a team meeting.

  • Link Rewards to Performance: Clearly connect rewards with performance. It’s not just about the outcome, but the effort and progress. Make sure your team knows what behaviors will be rewarded.

  • Regularly Review the Reward System: Check in often to make sure your reward system is motivating your team. Ask for feedback and be willing to improve it based on what they find most engaging.

  • Be Consistent: Consistency is key. Make sure every department receives recognition to foster a balanced and motivated workforce.

By focusing on these small, actionable steps, you can create a work environment where your team feels appreciated and driven to excel, without spending a lot of money or time.

liking doing something has nothing to do with what theing task is it has to do with are you getting rewarded for it I've had Tech reps who like fall in love with fixing bugs why because we would literally send them a Starbucks gift card every time they fixed a bug above a certain level people were feing to get these roles in the company for this Tech position it's just because like we like what we're good at and what we get rewarded for that's just how human behavior works so it it's not about the job it's just about how do you reinforce the job and I think traditionally Founders really reinforce marketing and sales because they're like it's an immediate impact and they understand it and they see it and they're like oh I know how to reinforce that like great job you made the company money well what about every other department you have to spend less time doing your team's job and more time rewarding them for doing their job
