How to Not Be Nervous

Summary

  • I learned not to be nervous when presenting by sticking to topics I'm familiar with. When I talked about the Civil War in high school without really knowing the material, it made me nervous.
  • To combat nerves, I also practice my presentations many times. Writing the speech is only 10% of the work; practicing it end-to-end is the other 90%.
  • Rehearsing a presentation around 20 times can significantly improve your confidence and delivery.

How To Take Action

I would suggest sticking to what you know when you're set to present or speak in front of people. That means choosing a topic you're comfortable with, just like I did after realizing talking about the Civil War without knowing much made me nervous.

A good way of doing this is to list out your strengths and areas of expertise. When you pick a topic from this list, you're more likely to feel confident.

Now for the practice part: Writing your presentation is just a tiny piece of the pie. The real magic happens when you rehearse. Try to run through your whole presentation around 20 times. Yes, 20 times. It sounds like a lot, but this will help you knock those nerves way down.

Here's what you can do:

  • Choose a topic you know like the back of your hand.
  • Write out your key points in a simple, easy-to-understand way.
  • Practice your presentation from start to finish, aiming for at least 20 run-throughs.
  • Each time you practice, pay attention to parts that trip you up and polish them until they're smooth.
  • Record yourself to see how you're improving and where you might need to adjust things.

By really getting to know your material and giving yourself plenty of rehearsal time, you'll be set up to crush your presentation with confidence. Want to get better? Keep applying these strategies, and watch how you grow in presenting and in understanding your business or personal growth subjects deeper.

I used to get nervous for presenting because I didn't know how to not be nervous so the two main things that I found are one is only talk about stuff that you know and so when I was doing high school presentations I'd be doing something on the Civil War and like I didn't know what I was talking about I just wrote something down cuz I had to have a speech that was 10 minutes long and the second thing is that I didn't practice I thought that writing the speech was the practice and that's like 10% of it the other 90% is how many times you go through it end to end and you'll be amazed at how much better your presentation gets if you actually go through it 20 times before you give it and so one is that I only talk about stuff I know and two is that I make sure it's not the first time I've said it
