How To Not Get Emotional About Your Business

Summary

  • When business isn't doing great, I remind myself of my place in the universe. I think about being just a "little monkey on a tiny rock" in a vast galaxy, which helps me realize that my problems aren't that big.
  • I frequently remind myself (about 20 times a day) that "nothing matters," which helps me regain focus and not get bogged down by minor setbacks.
  • When I'm afraid or anxious, I ask myself, "What am I so afraid of?" This helps me understand that the fear of the unknown is often worse than the reality.
  • The worst-case scenario might be less dire than I think. For example, if things go completely wrong, I might have to go back to my previous profession—like being a dentist. I remind myself that being a "rich dentist" is not the end of the world and that I have it better than many others.

How To Take Action

How to Apply These Strategies to Your Business and Personal Life

Keep Perspective

I would suggest implementing a habit of keeping things in perspective. Whenever you're feeling overwhelmed or stressed about your business or personal goals, remind yourself that in the grand scheme of things, these issues are really small. You can think of yourself as "a little monkey on a tiny rock in a vast galaxy." This helps to put your problems into perspective and makes them seem less daunting.

Use Mantras to Stay Focused

A good way of staying focused and not getting bogged down by minor setbacks is to adopt a mantra like "nothing matters." Say this to yourself whenever you feel things aren’t going well, just as I do about 20 times a day.

Confront Your Fears

When you're feeling afraid or anxious, ask yourself, "What am I so afraid of?" Often, you'll find that the fear of the unknown is much worse than the reality. This can help you understand that the consequences of failure are almost never as bad as they seem.

Imagining the Worst-Case Scenario

Consider what the worst-case scenario really looks like. For example, if your business fails, what’s the actual outcome? You may find that it’s not the end of the world. Maybe you'd go back to your previous job or profession, which might even offer a comfortable living. Thinking about the worst-case scenario helps to take the fear out of it, making it easier to take risks and move forward.

Practical Steps to Implement

  1. Daily Reminders: Set reminders on your phone to prompt you to think of these perspectives regularly.
  2. Journal: Write down your fears and worst-case scenarios. Seeing them in writing can make them seem less terrifying.
  3. Seek Perspective: Talk to someone who can help you see the bigger picture.

By implementing these strategies, you can reduce stress, stay focused, and manage fear more effectively—ultimately helping you to move forward with your business and personal growth.
