How You Can Change Careers (Without Quitting Your Job)

Summary

  • If you've spent a decade in a career but no longer enjoy it, you might struggle to switch paths because you've grown used to the income that supports your lifestyle.
  • You don't have to quit your job to pursue a new interest; use your free time outside of work to educate yourself and develop new skills.
  • By dedicating time to your new passion, you're likely to advance quicker in that area than in your current job, which you're not actively trying to improve in.
  • Keep investing in your new skill until you reach a competence level where you could potentially earn an income similar to your current job.
  • Once you've reached an equivalent level of expertise in your new field, you can make a change without having to compromise on your way of living.

How To Take Action

I would suggest using your free time smartly. First, figure out what you're really into now. You don't have to quit your job right away—keep it so you can pay your bills. Use your evenings and weekends to learn about your new interest. You can find free or cheap online courses and videos to learn new skills. Read books and practice a lot, too.

By giving time to what you love, you'll get better fast. You don't want to just stay okay at your current job—you want to get really good at your new thing. Keep working on it and don't give up. You'll see you're getting better and maybe even have fun.

Keep an eye on how good you're getting at your new skill. When you think you're really good, like maybe you can make money from it, that's your moment. It's time to think about changing your job. But do it smart, so you don't have less money than before.

You want to be able to pay for your life like you used to. So, make sure you can earn about the same money with your new skill before you switch. That way, you don't have to worry about money and can enjoy what you do every day.
