I Had a Bad Reputation In College…

Summary

  • I realized that in college, my reputation as a "Flander", someone known for focusing on girls, wasn't who I truly wanted to be.
  • To change my reputation, I didn't confront those spreading stories about me; instead, I committed to changing my behavior over an extended period.
  • When facing criticism or negativity, if the complaints are true, I find it's best to agree and then amplify — show that you're aware and willing to improve beyond what's been said.
  • If accusations or rumors are false and harm your reputation, the most effective response is to consistently act in a manner that embodies the truth and disproves the falsehoods through action, not words.

How To Take Action

A good way of doing better in life is to really look at who you want to be. When I had a not-so-great reputation, I didn't fight people's stories about me. Instead, I changed the way I acted. If you want to change something about yourself, do like I did:

  • First, think about the things you do that don't match who you want to be. Write them down on a list.
  • Second, make a plan for how you can act differently. Choose actions you can start right away, without needing lots of money or time. Can you be kinder? Can you work a bit harder? Small changes are a good start.
  • After that, do these new actions every day, for a long time. People will start noticing without you saying anything.

If someone says something about you and it's true, don't get mad. Own it! Say, "Yep, that's right, and I'm going to do even better." If they're saying things that aren't true, just show everyone who you really are through your actions. Do the right thing over and over. Soon, what they say won't matter because what you do will speak for you.

And remember, changing what people think about you doesn't happen fast. It takes a while. But if you keep at it, your actions will show the truth to everyone.
