If You’re Jealous, Get Excited

Summary

  • Stop putting yourself down for not being where someone else is. It’s up to you to change that.
  • When I see someone ahead of me, I think about what I can learn from them. If they can do it, so can I. We’re all humans.
  • Comparison helps us grow. It shows us that we can do better. Without it, we wouldn't know our true potential.

How To Take Action

I would suggest implementing the following strategies to help you grow personally and professionally:

1. Avoid Self-Victimization:
Start by recognizing when you're putting yourself down for not being where others are. Instead of feeling bad about it, remind yourself that it's within your control to make a change. Write down or voice record instances when you catch yourself thinking negatively about your position. Reflect on these thoughts and transform them into actionable steps.

2. Learn from Others:
When you see someone ahead of you, take it as a learning opportunity. List three to five people you admire in your field or personal life. Study their journeys, read their biographies, or listen to their interviews. Note specific strategies they used and think about how you can apply similar tactics in your life.

3. Healthy Comparison:
Use comparison as a tool for motivation, not as a means to feel inferior. Make a list of your own strengths and achievements. Compare them to someone you admire and identify one or two areas where you can improve. Set realistic, small goals to work on those areas.

4. Self-Reflection:
Spend a few minutes each day reflecting on what you've learned and how you can apply it. Keep a journal where you jot down insights and actionable steps you can take. This practice will help you stay focused and motivated.

5. Community and Networking:
Surround yourself with like-minded people. Join professional groups or online forums where you can share experiences and learn from others. Engaging with a supportive community can provide inspiration and practical advice for growth.

By implementing these strategies, you'll harness the power of comparison to fuel your growth and push yourself to reach new heights, both personally and professionally.
