Ignore Everyone Else

Summary

  • Be fiercely self-competitive: I've realized that it's way more productive to compete with yourself than to obsess over what your competitors are doing.
  • Focus on your potential: In the past, my attention was too much on my competition, but I've learned that aiming to simply outdo them sets the bar too low.
  • Value those who see your potential: Having someone believe in your greater potential can inspire you to reach for higher goals than you originally set for yourself.
  • Ignore the copycats: If others try to copy your work, it's a sign you're doing something right. Rather than focusing on them, concentrate on improving your own game.

How To Take Action

Here's a good way to boost your small biz or personal growth:

Compete with yourself, not others.
When I used to focus on others, I didn't do as well. Now, I try to beat my own records. This way, I get way stronger.

Aim beyond just winning against others.
Before, I just wanted to beat others and it was a super small goal. Try setting your sights on what you can really achieve, not just on getting ahead of the person next to you.

Cherish folks who believe you can do more.
When someone says you can do big things, believe them! It can push you to set bigger goals and actually make it there.

Ignore the copycats.
If people copy what you do, it's a thumbs-up! They think your stuff's good. So just keep getting better at what you do.

Here's what to do:

  1. Write down what you did yesterday. Today, try to do better.
  2. Set a goal that seems a bit scary because it's so big. Work on it little by little.
  3. If someone says "You can do it!" and it feels right, listen to them. They might see your true power.
  4. When others copy you, don't get mad. Remember, it means you're leading. Just keep leading by getting even better at what you're awesome at.
