My Employee Wanted to Take My Job

Summary

  • I had a leader who told me he wanted to be CEO one day, which I thought was great. But I pointed out to him that he couldn’t be a leader if he yelled at people behind my back.

  • I asked him to decide what he wanted more: to yell at people or to be a CEO and a leader.

  • He said he wanted to be a CEO and a leader. I noticed his behavior improved for a few days, but soon enough, he yelled at someone again.

  • I learned to watch what people do more than what they say. Actions reveal true intentions, not words.

  • If someone's actions don't match their words, then what they truly want might be different from what they say.

How To Take Action

I would suggest implementing a practice where you focus more on actions rather than words, whether it’s personal growth or as a business leader. Start small by observing your own behaviors and those of others in your circle or team.

A good way of doing this is to keep a journal or make notes about specific actions taken each day. This helps in identifying patterns over time and ensures that the actions align with stated goals.

For example, if you say you want to grow your business but you’re not actively pursuing opportunities or engaging with customers, then there’s a disconnect. Take note of these actions and adjust them to match your goals.

When it comes to leadership, remember to lead by example. Consistently model the behavior you want to see in others. This way, you create an environment where actions speak louder than words, encouraging others to follow suit.

You might also want to create a feedback loop within your team. Encourage open and honest feedback about how actions align with goals. This can be done in weekly meetings or through a simple feedback form.

Lastly, hold yourself accountable by reflecting on the alignment of your actions and your goals weekly. This reflection will help reinforce positive changes and identify areas for improvement. These small steps help foster personal growth and business success organically.
