My Strategy to Change Behavior

Summary

  • When helping people change behaviors, I first identify the current behavior they need to change.
  • I then clearly tell them what behavior I want them to adopt instead.
  • I implement a tracking system where they self-measure how well they are doing daily with the new behavior.
  • This self-tracking helps them feel empowered and focused on their progress.
  • Focusing on how many times they did the new good behavior is easier and more positive than dwelling on the bad behavior.

How To Take Action

I would suggest implementing a behavior change strategy by first identifying what's not working. Whether you're a small business owner, an entrepreneur, or someone focused on personal growth, pinpoint the specific behavior you want to change. The key here is to be honest with yourself about what's holding you back.

Next, clearly define the new behavior you want to adopt. For example, if you want to improve customer service in your business, make it specific—like greeting every customer within the first minute they enter the store.

A good way to stay accountable is by setting up a self-tracking system. This doesn't have to be complicated or expensive. You can use a simple journal or a free app to track your progress daily. Mark down each day you successfully perform the new behavior. For instance, note every day you greeted customers promptly or completed your morning exercise.

The beauty of self-tracking is that it keeps you focused on your progress, not your failures. By seeing how often you’re hitting your new behavior, you’ll feel more empowered and motivated. This approach is low-cost and low-time, but high-value because it builds positive momentum.

Finally, keep the process positive. Instead of dwelling on the days you missed, celebrate and count the days you succeeded. This mindset shift will make the entire process feel more rewarding and sustainable.

By identifying your current behavior, setting a clear new habit, tracking your progress, and maintaining a positive outlook, you can make significant changes without major investments of time or money.

essentially what I'm doing uh for a couple different people that I'm trying to help change behaviors well one is I tell them what I want them to do instead so first have them identify what is the behavior that you're doing and so I have them self-identify that and then it's like okay what's the behavior that we want to do instead and then what I put into place is tracking and so I have them self measuring basically how they're doing on a daily basis with these behaviors so they can tell me I'm not telling them they're telling me how well they're doing doing on doing or not doing this thing a lot of the times we feel pretty I want to say like it can feel pretty disempowering when we're trying to get them to focus on the future the easiest thing to do is just to have them start tracking how many times they did the new good thing instead of the thing that I don't want them to do
