People Want You to Lose

Summary

  • People often cheer for you when you're starting and taking risks because it doesn't threaten their own choices.
  • Once you begin to succeed and surpass others, the support can diminish as it can make them question their own risks.
  • I found that when I opened my gym, everyone was supportive at the beginning when I was struggling.
  • As my gym became successful, I noticed fewer people cheered me on, which seemed odd at first.
  • I realized that my success highlighted the risks others weren't willing to take, making my victories less palatable to them.
  • Understanding this helped me make sense of their reactions and focus on my own path without relying on external validation.

How To Take Action

I would suggest realizing that you can't rely on others to cheer for you all the time. When you're starting a business or working on personal growth, expect support in the beginning. But don't be surprised if it fades as you succeed. People might feel threatened by your success if they haven't taken similar risks themselves. It's normal, so don't let it get you down.

What you need to do is focus on your goals and not wait for anyone's approval. Keep pushing without expecting external validation. If you're opening a business, like a gym I once did, be ready for a change in reactions as you grow. When you're struggling, others might support you more because it makes them feel better about their own choices. But, when your business starts doing well, and especially if it's doing really well, that support might drop.

Understand their perspective and you'll make sense of their reactions. It's not about you; it's about them. Their support is not the fuel you need to keep going. The real fuel is your drive and determination. Always keep focusing on improving and moving forward. Stay on your path, and put your energy into what you can control, which is your effort and attitude. The less time you spend worrying about others' reactions or validation, the more time you'll have to create your success. And remember, it's your journey, not theirs.
