Rush Is Imaginary

Summary

  • You can't rush certain processes; some things naturally take time, like creating a baby.
  • A sense of urgency is often self-imposed and can lead to poor decision-making.
  • Rushing can result in hiring the wrong people and moving too fast as a business.
  • When my team struggles, I've learned to let them breathe instead of pushing them harder immediately.
  • Previously, I didn't consider their capacity to handle more, which led to losing a lot of money.

How To Take Action

I would suggest starting by recognizing that some processes naturally take time. Like growing a business, you can't rush everything. Accept that, and avoid setting unrealistic timelines, as they can lead to stress and poor decisions.

A good way of doing this is by questioning the urgency behind your deadlines. Ask yourself: Is this urgency real or just a pressure I'm putting on myself? Sometimes, removing this self-imposed rush can help in making clearer, wiser decisions.

For hiring, focus on quality over speed. Rushing to fill positions can lead to poor hires, costing time and money down the line. Consider taking a bit longer to ensure candidates are a good fit for your team’s culture and goals. Think of the long-term gains instead of short-term convenience.

When your team feels overwhelmed, let them breathe. Instead of pushing even harder, give them a moment to regroup. This doesn't mean stopping altogether but allowing them time to recover can lead to better productivity and morale. Check in with them regularly to assess their capacity so you’re not burdening them beyond their limits.

Lastly, reflect on past instances when haste led to mistakes. Use those experiences as a learning tool to create better strategies moving forward. By minimizing rush, you'll enhance decision-making and ultimately save resources.
