Should You Hire for Experience All the Time?

Summary

  • I need to figure out which roles I'm not familiar with and need to hire experienced people for.
  • Conversely, I must identify roles in my area of expertise where I can confidently train new hires.
  • Striking the right balance is crucial; too much training can overwhelm my schedule, while too many external opinions can create conflict.
  • Building a strong team requires a good mixture of individuals I can mentor and those who bring valuable experience.

How To Take Action

  • Take a look at what jobs are a bit of a mystery to you. You'll want to find folks who know their stuff to fill those spots.
  • Now flip it. Think about what you're super good at, things you could teach someone in your sleep. You want to bring in people you can help grow in those areas.
  • Balancing is key. You don't want to spend all your time teaching, or you won't get your own work done. But too many chefs in the kitchen with their own recipes can cause a mess.
  • Aim to create a dream team with a mix of both; some who will look to you for guidance and others who already come with a toolbox full of skills.
I would suggest starting by making a list of all the jobs in your business. Next to each one, write if it's a strength of yours, a weakness, or somewhere in between.
For the roles you don't know well, do some research on the kind of experience folks should have. Think about what those jobs need and look for people who match that.
On the other side, consider which roles you can train folks in. You want to find team players who fit with how you do things, and you can help them get even better.
Try not to lean too much one way. If you spend all your time teaching, your own work might slide. But if everybody's used to doing things their way, they might butt heads.
Your goal is to put together a crew with a bit of both: new learners and seasoned pros. This way, you get a healthy mix of fresh energy and trusted know-how.

That balance makes sure your team is solid, everyone's growing, and you've got a variety of ideas to make your business shine.
