The Leverage of Skill
Summary
- Leverage is crucial to success; it's about getting more out of what you put in.
- Picture leverage like a lever; where you apply effort affects how much force you get in return.
- Skills themselves are powerful leverage. Mastering a skill allows you to achieve much more with the same amount of effort.
- For example, if two people make 100 phone calls, the skilled one might get 10 appointments, while the unskilled one might get only 1.
- This means the skilled person has 10 times the leverage compared to the beginner.
- Acquiring and refining skills increases your leverage and multiplies your results.

How To Take Action
I would suggest focusing first on developing and refining key skills. This doesn't have to cost a lot of money or time, but it can provide huge benefits. Start by identifying the most critical skills for your business or personal growth. For example, if you're in sales, mastering phone calls can give you a significant edge.
A good way to start is by dedicating an hour each day to skill development. This could be reading a book, taking an online course, or practicing a specific task. Even a small time investment can lead to big improvements over time.
Next, think about where to apply your effort. Just like the lever analogy, where you place your effort affects your outcomes. Focus on high-impact activities. For example, if networking brings in the most clients, spend more time meeting potential customers rather than getting bogged down in admin tasks.
It's also essential to keep track of your progress. Measure your results to see the impact of your efforts. If calling 100 people used to get you one appointment, but now it gets you five, you're making progress. Use this feedback to refine your approach and continue improving.
Lastly, leverage isn't just about individual effort. Find tools or systems that can amplify your work. For instance, using a CRM system can help you manage leads more effectively, giving you more time to focus on closing deals.
By focusing on skill development, prioritizing high-impact tasks, measuring progress, and utilizing systems for efficiency, you'll get more out of what you put in, achieving greater success with less effort.
