The Stress of Trying to be Perfect Is Slowing You Down

Summary

  • Remember, the pursuit of perfection can sometimes do more harm than good; cut yourself some slack.
  • Massive, imperfect action towards a single goal can yield greater results than trying to do everything flawlessly.
  • Dedicate yourself to a "season of no," where you prioritize a specific goal by saying no to almost everything else.
  • Embrace imbalance when necessary because it's the imbalance that can lead to outsized returns in the area you're focusing on.
  • It's okay to forgo a balanced life temporarily if it means achieving something extraordinary in one particular aspect.

How To Take Action

I would suggest starting by letting go of being perfect at everything. Trying to do it all can actually slow you down. Instead, pick one goal that really matters to you and go after it with everything you've got, even if it's messy.

Focus on taking big steps toward your goal. Don't worry if they’re not perfect. It's better to move fast and make mistakes than to not move at all. This way, you'll learn faster and get further along than if you tried to make everything flawless.

Another thing you could do is have a "season of no." This means saying no to a lot of stuff so you can say yes to your big goal. It might feel weird to not balance everything, but it's okay. Sometimes, skipping balance is how you make big things happen. If you keep your life balanced all the time, you might miss out on a chance to do something really big in one area.

When you decide to embrace imbalance, it's like going all-in on a great hand in a card game. Yes, you'll have to give up some things, but what you can win is way bigger. Remember, it's about what you gain, not what you give up. So, focus hard on your goal, and accept that life might be a little lopsided for a while. It'll be worth it in the end.
