Watch this BEFORE Your Job Interview

Summary

  • Smile convincingly to make a memorable first impression, as a genuine smile can impact the hiring manager's subconscious decision within the first few minutes of the interview.
  • Show sincere interest in the interviewer by asking questions about their role and experiences, which creates a sense of engagement and likability.
  • Use the job-specific language found in the job posting, since this demonstrates familiarity with the role and indicates that you fit within the company's culture.
  • Always dress up for the interview, even more so than usual, to stand out and show that you value the opportunity, because appearance does influence first impressions.
  • Offer a thoughtful compliment to the interviewer, derived from pre-interview research on their professional or personal interests, as this can establish a connection and align values, making you more likable.

How To Take Action

I would suggest implementing these strategies before your next interview for big positive results:

First, practice your smile in the mirror before the interview starts. That way, when you meet the interviewer or join the video call, your smile is ready and bright. This makes you seem happy and excited about the job, which is a great first impression. Smiling doesn't cost anything and can really help.

Second, be sure to ask the interviewer questions about their job and what they like about the company. It shows that you care and are interested in them. People really like it when you are interested in what they do.

When you talk about the job, use words that you saw in the job description. For example, if they say "team player," you can talk about times you've worked well in a team. This shows them you understand the job and fit in.

Always dress up for the interview. It's better to look too nice than not nice enough. If you don't have fancy clothes, pick the nicest thing you have. Being well-dressed tells the interviewer that you think this job is important.

Last, try to give the interviewer a compliment. Look them up online before the interview and find something you can say something nice about. Maybe they volunteered somewhere or won an award. People enjoy compliments and it can help them remember you.

By smiling, showing interest, using the right words, dressing up, and giving compliments, you'll make a really strong impression without spending much money or time. Good luck!
