We’ve Normalized Avoidance…

Summary

  • It's crucial to teach people not to be scared of their feelings; it's okay to feel depressed or angry if someone has wronged you.
  • Much of my adult life has been about unlearning the things I heard in traditional media and on the news.
  • There are days when I don't want to work for 6 or 7 hours or more, and then go speak at an event, but I still push through.
  • Taking unnecessary "self-care" days, like a bubble bath, often conflates self-care with avoidance.
  • Avoidance only makes problems worse and normalizing it is harmful to mental health.

How To Take Action

I would suggest implementing these strategies to enhance personal growth and improve your small business or entrepreneurial journey.

Embrace Your Emotions

It's crucial to understand that feeling upset or angry is okay. Don’t be scared of your emotions. Allow yourself to feel them, as it’s a healthy part of processing and moving forward.

Unlearn Unhelpful Messages

A good way of doing this is to critically analyze the information you consume. Question the messages you hear on social media or the news and determine if they align with your values and goals. This can help you unlearn unhelpful beliefs and replace them with more constructive ones.

Push Through Resistance

There will be days when you don’t feel like working long hours or attending events. It’s important to push through these feelings and focus on your end goals. Remind yourself that every step you take, even when it’s tough, brings you closer to success.

Reframe Self-Care

Taking unnecessary "self-care" days can sometimes be a form of avoidance. Instead of indulging in activities that don’t address the root of your stress, like bubble baths, focus on actions that truly help you grow. This could be setting achievable daily goals, seeking constructive feedback, or learning something new.

Avoiding Avoidance

To avoid normalizing avoidance, tackle your problems head-on. Break tasks into smaller steps to make them more manageable and set deadlines to keep yourself accountable. By staying proactive, you reduce stress and create a more productive environment for yourself and your business.
