What Do You Do After High School?

Summary

  • I got my degree in exercise science, but it was basically useless.
  • You need to ask yourself: do you know what you want to do, and can you learn that skill better in college or outside of it?
  • For some careers, like being a surgeon, you definitely need to go to college.
  • If you want to own a business or get into fitness, you don't necessarily need to go to school.
  • Compare a four-year degree to spending four years in entry-level jobs; you might learn more from real-world experience.
  • College costs a lot of money, whereas working allows you to make money.
  • I didn't learn much from my degree, despite what people say.
  • Don't listen to those who insist you must go to school; there are plenty of paths to success without it.
  • School is not the most attractive option anymore given all the alternatives.

How To Take Action

I would suggest implementing these strategies to grow your small business or personal growth with low-cost and high-value actions.

1. Learn from Experience:
Spend time in entry-level jobs or internships related to your interest or business. This real-world experience is often more valuable than classroom learning and helps you understand the nuances of the industry.

2. Online Learning:
Take advantage of free or low-cost online courses to gain specific skills. Websites like Coursera, Khan Academy, or YouTube offer a vast array of resources. You can learn anything from digital marketing to coding without spending much money.

3. Networking:
Connect with professionals in your industry through LinkedIn or local meetups. Networking can open doors to mentorship opportunities, partnerships, and client leads without any financial investment.

4. Practical Application:
If you want to get into fitness or start a business, start small. Create a simple business plan and begin testing your ideas. This hands-on approach will teach you much more than theoretical learning.

5. Stay Updated:
Follow industry trends and consume content like podcasts, blogs, and webinars. This keeps you informed and allows you to adapt to changes quickly, without spending extra money.

6. Question Traditional Paths:
Constantly evaluate if traditional paths like college are necessary for your goals. Consider alternative paths that can save you both time and money while providing real value.

7. Financial Management:
Focus on managing your finances carefully. Track your expenses and revenues closely to make informed decisions that foster growth and sustainability.

Implementing these strategies will help you gain valuable skills, make meaningful connections, and acquire hands-on experience, all while saving money and time.
