Why I Changed Everything

Summary

  • I had a friend who runs a business making a million a month. He told me he stopped listening to my stuff.
  • He said he listened to me for 5 years but felt he wasn't my target audience. I realized he actually was.
  • I told my team we needed to shift our focus back to pure business topics.
  • When we did that, our average video views dropped in half.
  • However, the content became easier to produce and we got more website opt-ins and book sales.
  • The algorithm is great at showing niche content to the right people, so it's okay to have videos with only 19 views.

How To Take Action

A good way of doing personal growth or improving a small business is to focus on what's most relevant to your target audience. Start by narrowing down your content to purely business topics if that's what your core audience finds most valuable.

Here are some actionable steps:

  1. Identify Your Core Audience: Assess who your true audience is. If they're business-oriented, create content that directly addresses their needs.

  2. Simplified Content Production: Instead of putting extensive effort into heavily produced content, create simpler, more straightforward pieces. This saves time and money, and your audience may appreciate the directness.

  3. Leverage Algorithm Strengths: Understand that social media algorithms are good at showing your content to the right niche. Don't be discouraged by low view counts if your content is reaching the right people.

  1. Monitor Engagement Over Views: Focus on metrics that matter to your business, like website opt-ins and sales, rather than just video views. High-engagement with fewer views is more valuable than low-engagement with many views.

  2. Consistent Value Delivery: Keep delivering valuable information consistently. Even if some videos have low views, if they’re high in value, they'll attract the right audience over time.

  3. Feedback Loop: Regularly gather feedback from your audience. This can be through comments, direct messages, or surveys. Adjust your content based on what they find most beneficial.

By focusing on these steps, you’re investing in growth with minimal cost and time. The key is to stay consistent, be mindful of your audience's needs, and let the algorithm do its job in reaching the right people.
