Why I Recommend You Study People

Summary

  • I recommend studying psychology to understand what makes people tick. This knowledge is essential for effective communication and persuasion.
  • It's important to distinguish between manipulation and influence. Manipulation benefits you but harms the other person, while influence benefits both parties.
  • By understanding people better, I can communicate in a way that gets both of us what we want.
  • Think through the processes you put in place and anticipate the outcomes of your actions and words.
  • There is often a gap in understanding how our words impact others and their subsequent actions. We need to bridge this gap for better communication.

How To Take Action

Action Plan

Study Psychology

I would suggest diving into the basics of psychology. You don’t need to spend a lot of money; many resources are available for free online. Understanding what motivates people helps in communication and persuasion. You might start by reading articles or watching videos that explain human behavior and motivation.

Influence Over Manipulation

A good way to implement better communication is by focusing on mutual benefits. When you need someone to take action, think about how it will benefit both of you. Always aim to create win-win situations rather than just looking out for your own interests.

Understand Your Words’ Impact

Think through the outcomes of your words before you speak. Imagine how the other person might feel or react to what you are saying. An easy way to start is by pausing for a moment to consider the other person’s perspective before making requests or giving feedback.

Improve Communication Processes

Another simple but effective strategy is to reflect on past interactions. Look at what worked well and what didn’t. Think about how you could phrase things differently next time for a better response. Journaling these reflections can be a low-cost tool to refine your communication skills over time.

Anticipate Reactions

Before making decisions or implementing processes, try to predict how others will react. This doesn’t require much time but can significantly improve your outcomes. Role-playing or discussing scenarios with a friend or mentor can also help you prepare for different reactions.

Continuous Learning

Finally, make it a habit to keep learning about people. You don't have to dedicate hours; even just regularly reading a few pages of a psychology book or listening to a podcast on human behavior can provide new insights that can be immediately useful in your interactions.

Following these steps can help you communicate more effectively, influence positively, and achieve better outcomes in both personal and business relationships without requiring large investments of time or money.

study psychology like you need to understand what makes people tick if you understand what makes people tick you can get people to do things and not because you know I would say manipulation is getting someone to do something that is good for you and bad for them versus like influence is like getting someone to do something that's good for them and you and so for me it's always just been like the more I understand people the more I can communicate in a way and think through if I put this process in place what will happen next what will it cause this person to do and so in my opinion the Gap is always our understanding of how what we say translates into what is that person going to do based on what I just said
