How To Take Action
I would suggest implementing several strategies to manage team members effectively, particularly when considering whether to keep or fire someone.
Prioritize Overall Well-Being: Always think about how each team member affects the whole business. Before making any personnel decisions, consider the impact on the company's overall performance. This ensures you are acting for the greater good of everyone involved.
Evaluate Individual Performance: Recognize when holding onto an underperforming employee is detrimental to the team. Be honest about their performance and its effects on others. Remember, keeping one low performer can drag down the entire team.
Balance Relationships with Business Needs: Understand that you don't need to stop caring about individuals. Instead, balance your personal relationships with the needs of the business. It's about maintaining a clear boundary between personal feelings and business decisions.
Act as a Steward of the Business: Embrace your role as a steward of the business. This means sometimes making tough decisions to protect the overall well-being of the company. The business supports everyone, so safeguarding it is a priority.
Make Tough Decisions for the Greater Good: Don't let personal comfort or relationships prevent you from making necessary decisions. Prioritize what’s best for the entire company over individual relationships. This might mean having difficult conversations, but it’s essential for the health and longevity of your business.
Start with these low-cost, high-value strategies, and you'll create a healthier work environment and a more resilient business.
