You Have to Face Reality

Summary

  • I don't believe in constant reassurance when trying to facilitate change; instead, I focus on helping people face reality for real progress.

  • When I was a personal trainer, I would encourage clients to confront their current situation, like knowing their weight, so we could start solving the problem together.

  • Understanding your starting point is crucial. If you don't know where you are, it's tough to determine what steps to take next or how extensive the solution needs to be.

  • Though facing reality can be painful initially, it helps avoid the long-term pain of letting problems grow unchecked.

  • When people ignore their problems, like avoiding the scale, they often make things worse. It's crucial to confront issues head-on to truly help change and improve.

How To Take Action

I would suggest starting by facing the truth about your current situation. Whether it's your business, personal growth, or any other goal, knowing exactly where you stand is key. It's like stepping on a scale; it shows you the reality that can kickstart your journey of improvement.

A good way of doing this is to identify the areas you're avoiding. Are there problems you're turning a blind eye to because they're uncomfortable? Write them down, visualize them, and embrace the discomfort. This awareness, painful as it might be, is helpful for actual progress.

Next, map out small, clear steps to improve from your starting point. If it's a business, this could be examining your financials honestly. If it's personal growth, assess your habits and mindsets that may be holding you back. It's like plotting a course on a map once you know where you are.

Involve others for perspective. Just like in training, sometimes an outside eye—be it a mentor, peer, or even your own honest reflection—helps illuminate blind spots you might have missed.

Remember, ignoring issues won't make them disappear; they'll just get bigger. Facing them head-on might be tough, but it's important for true, lasting change. Start with small, manageable steps and build momentum. The path to success is clearer when you know exactly where you're starting from.

you can't keep reassuring them when I was a personal trainer and I was trying to help people lose weight I never told somebody hey it's okay because I actually wanted to help them I actually wanted them to change and so instead I would ask them to Face Reality one of the things that I always did is I kept a weight scale in my office and whenever people would walk in women specifically I would say how much do you weigh and they're like I don't know and I haven't weighed myself in years I was like well you know it's a lot more right I'm like let's find out how much it is today and they were like I don't want to weigh myself and I said have to start at some point we need to know what current state looks like so we know how to solve if I don't know how bad it is then I don't know how much of a solution you need from me would it be painful for them of course but what's more painful is continuing to gain weight continuing to make the problem worse and continuing to keep our head under a rock
