Your Business Needs Core Values

Summary

  • I believe core values are about how you accomplish tasks.
  • For example, I observed something at work that I didn't approve of.
  • Because I hold sincere candor as a core value, I had to address the issue.
  • However, I also believe in praise over punishment, so I had to think of a kind way to handle it.
  • I couldn't just focus on being direct without considering the person's feelings.
  • I use core values like filters for making decisions that reflect what we stand for.

How To Take Action

I would suggest starting by identifying what your core values are. Think about what is most important to you in the way you do things. It could be honesty, kindness, or being hardworking. Write down these values and keep them where you can see them every day.

If you see something happening that doesn't fit with your values, remember, it's important to speak up. But also remember to be kind. For example, if you value honesty but also kindness, find a gentle way to tell someone if they make a mistake. You can do this by praising what they do right and then suggesting how to improve.

When you have to make a decision, use your core values like a filter. Ask yourself, "Does this choice match my values?" This will help you do things in a way that feels right to you.

If you're working with others, share your values with them. This way, everyone knows what's important and can help each other stay true to those values. Talk about your values in meetings or put them up on a wall in your office.

Remember, you might need to think creatively to keep to your values. It's like using a map to find the best way to go. Sometimes you'll need to take a different road, but you'll still get where you want to go with your values leading you.

Lastly, praise yourself and others when you do things according to your values. It's good to recognize when you're doing things right. This will help you keep using your values every day.

when I think of core values I think of how you get things done I can even give you an example today I saw something that somebody did in the company that I didn't like I have a value of sincere cander but I also value praise over punishment which is like I don't want to punish people so I'm like okay I have to think more creatively about how I'm going to guide somebody in correcting their behavior than I would if I were somebody who only valued sincere cander and didn't give a about people's feelings and so I look at them more as like decision-making filters that we run our daily Act activities through to be cohesive with the values that we represent
