Your Problem Isn’t “Being Consistent”

Summary

  • When I was 100 pounds overweight and facing challenges like getting arrested six times, I realized I was consistent in the wrong activities, like drinking too much, binge-watching Netflix, and overeating.

  • To change behavior and move towards my goals, I ask myself three simple questions:

    • What do I need to start doing to help me reach my goals?

    • What do I need to stop doing that's holding me back or preventing me from reaching my goals?

    • What should I continue doing because it's helping me achieve my goals?

  • These questions help me align my actions with my goals and keep me on the right path.

How To Take Action

I would suggest implementing a strategy for personal growth by asking yourself three critical questions regularly. Here's how you can do it:

  1. Start Doing: Identify one new activity or habit that will move you closer to your goals. This doesn't have to be complicated or expensive. For instance, if you want to get healthier, start with simple activities like a daily 10-minute walk or replacing soda with water. Small, consistent actions are powerful.

  2. Stop Doing: Pinpoint behaviors that are preventing you from reaching your goals. This might be spending too much time on social media or eating junk food. Choose one thing to reduce or eliminate. Remember, progress comes from making room for positive habits by cutting out the negative ones.

  3. Continue Doing: Recognize the things you are already doing well that bring you closer to your goals. Give yourself credit for these and make sure to keep these positive habits in your daily routine. Consistency builds momentum.

Stay committed to this process, and revise your list of Start, Stop, and Continue activities as you see progress and encounter new challenges. This method is low-cost and requires just a little time each day to reflect and adjust. By aligning your habits with your goals, you’ll stay on the right path and see the change you want over time.
