Your Thoughts Don’t Control You

Summary

  • I emphasize the importance of accepting thoughts to create a more productive life rather than a destructive one.
  • Detaching from thoughts is crucial. I’ve experienced various thoughts and still deal with them daily.
  • Label your thoughts for what they truly are. Most people mistakenly treat thoughts as facts and reality.
  • Remember, thoughts are just sentences in your mind. They are not your reality.
  • Start by acknowledging, "I'm having a thought that…" instead of identifying with the thought directly, like saying "I am anxious."
  • Noticing the difference in phrasing helps create a separation between yourself and your thoughts.
  • Even if a thought feels wild and overwhelming, you don't have to believe it.
  • Our brains are wired to help us survive, not necessarily for success, so we must consciously create space and perspective.

How To Take Action

I would suggest starting by recognizing and accepting that thoughts are simply thoughts, not facts. This helps prevent your mind from taking you on a negative spiral.

A good way of doing this is by labeling your thoughts for what they truly are. Try to catch yourself when you're about to say, "I am anxious," and instead say, "I’m having a thought that I'm anxious." Doing this simple rephrasing can create a healthy distance between you and your thoughts, making them less daunting.

Remember, thoughts are just sentences in your mind. They are not your reality. If a thought feels wild or overwhelming, remind yourself that you don't have to believe it. Practice accepting thoughts without judgment.

Understanding that our brains are wired for survival, not necessarily for success, can help normalize these overwhelming thoughts. Practice creating space and perspective by reminding yourself that these thoughts are just your brain’s survival mechanism kicking in.

Each day, set aside a few minutes to sit quietly and observe your thoughts without engaging with them. This practice can increase your awareness and help you detach from unhelpful thought patterns.

Implement these small changes daily. They don’t cost money, and they don’t require a lot of time, but over time they can dramatically change how you interact with your mind and create a more productive life.
