You’re Creating Excuses for Yourself
Summary
- Many of you create stories to justify why your product isn't where it should be.
- These stories make you feel better and excuse you from working harder.
- When you hear business people on podcasts, remember they often don't fully know why something worked.
- People often ask if my difficult childhood or relationship with my father made me driven. I don't know, but I am driven.
- We tend to create narratives to believe and explain our drive or success, even without knowing the exact cause.

How To Take Action
I would suggest focusing on removing the stories or excuses you're telling yourself about why your product or business isn't where it should be. Start by recognizing these narratives for what they are: excuses. Identify one story you keep telling yourself and challenge it. Is it really true, or is it something you use to feel better and justify not working harder?
A good way of doing this is by setting specific, actionable goals. Pick one area of your business that needs improvement. Maybe it's your marketing strategy, product quality, or customer service. Set a small, measurable target to improve that area within a week. For example, if it's marketing, commit to posting one piece of valuable content on social media every day for a week.
Remember, the successful people you hear on podcasts often don’t know the exact reasons why something worked for them. So, don't get too bogged down by trying to find a perfect formula. Instead, try different strategies, learn from them, and adapt as you go.
Lastly, stop overthinking the reasons behind your drive or lack thereof. Whether it's because of your childhood or your relationship with your parents, it doesn't matter. Focus on the fact that you are driven and use that drive to get things done. Take actionable steps every day toward your goals, and over time, the results will speak for themselves.
